Industry

Techlandia crosses the boundaries of both geography and expertise. Hardware and software design are each independent regional strengths, born out of Portland's legacy of high technology spinoffs from bedrock companies like Tektronix and Intel. Those spinoffs of the 1970s and early 1980s grew into major international firms, including Mentor Graphics and Metheus Corporation, and Sequent Computer Systems. Techlandia is rising from the interplay between hardware and software, and the region’s strong concentrations and strategic advantages in both.

Techlandia includes the burgeoning software industry as well as the established semiconductor, computer and electronic manufacturing industries. Software supports 19,500 jobs, 2,300 firms, an $89,000 average wage, and 25% growth projected in next ten years. Computer and Electronic Manufacturing supports 35,000 jobs, a $108,000 average wage, and a semiconductor sector nine times more concentrated in Greater Portland than the national average.
